Would I Benefit From Chemical Face Peels?

Almost everyone can benefit from a face peel. They can improve the overall texture of your skin, they can make it softer and help even out the tones and reduce redness. The treatment is especially beneficial if you have sun damage, acne scars, or wrinkles and fine lines you'd like to see diminished. If you'd like to learn more, to find out about the types of peels offered and which would best benefit your skin, reach out to Dr. Tamara Moss of Moss Dermatology in Forest Hills, NY. Generally, three types of chemical face peels are common.

Light Peels

All types of chemical peel procedures work by removing a top layer of skin cells to help expose the healthy skin beneath.

They vary in the types of acids used to accomplish this goal and in the downtime required after the treatment.

A light peel, for example, doesn't require as much recovery time as other alternatives because of the milder acids employed in the procedure. You may experience a tingling sensation after the chemical solution is removed or neutralized.

Medium Peels

You can expect a similar sensation after a medium peel, although it may be accompanied by a slight burning feeling that should subside in about 20 minutes. The downtime is not much different from the light peel, perhaps a few more days, but a medium peel is more effective.

Deep Peels

While the above treatments may call for a numbing gel, or another type of pain relief to ease discomfort, for a deep peel you will likely be given a sedative. It also takes longer to heal than the above methods, but the results are often dramatic. It's the best treatment for acne scars, as the others are best equipped at managing acne.
